| Abstract Scope |
Improving the recovery of critical and strategic metals from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) requires moving beyond bulk processing approaches. A promising pathway is the separate treatment of different electronic components (ECs) originating from printed circuit boards (PCBs), which concentrate a wide range of (critical) raw materials. Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) stand out as a particularly interesting fraction, owing to their barium titanate (BaTiO₃)-based ceramic matrix incorporating nickel as a primary conductor and rare earth elements (REEs) as functional dopants. This study, therefore, focuses on developing a hydrometallurgical route for the recovery of these critical resources from MLCCs. Characterization revealed nickel and REE concentrations of up to 28.3 wt.% and 0.6 wt.%, respectively. Evaluation of the leaching behavior of elements present has been conducted using different lixiviants on a pristine MLCC stream. Further work will extend to a metallic bin obtained through an upstream component-based sorting process. |
