| Abstract Scope |
Rare earth elements (REEs) are in high demand due to their essential role in many technologies. This work investigated the application of deep eutectic solvent (DES) leaching to recover REEs from goethite-rich RE mine tailings containing 8.4% REOT, with 52.2% Fe2O3 impurity. The REEs were mainly associated with phosphate minerals, including monazite, crandallite, and florencite. To enhance the REE leaching, alkaline roasting using NaOH, followed by water leaching, was conducted to convert REE-phosphates into oxides. Approximately 95% of phosphorus was removed under both roasting conditions. The water-leached residues were subsequently leached using an ethylene glycol-maleic acid DES at 70 °C for 6 h. REE leaching efficiency varied but typically ranged from 10-50%, while higher efficiencies were obtained for Sc and Y. The sample roasted at 400 °C showed higher overall REE leaching efficiency than that roasted at 500 °C. |
