| Abstract Scope |
Chromium is a critical alloying component across metals industries, in particular for stainless steel. Separation of impurities from chromium-bearing resources and purification of chromium enables extraction of higher-grade chromium products. Generation of iron and chromium sulfides from iron chromite via sulfidation was investigated and processes for Cr extraction and purification proposed. High temperature sulfidation of chromite with sulfur gas was studied and the impacts of sulfur flow, grain size, and chemical additives were investigated. Thermodynamic calculations and gas-solid sulfidation experiments were performed. The products of gas-solid sulfidation reactions were analyzed via SEM-EDS and WDXRF analysis and the off-gas constituents measured. Sulfidation with elemental sulfur results in the generation of a Cr-enriched oxide phase and Fe-rich sulfides. Reducing conditions result in a more rapid reaction and generation of more Cr-rich sulfides. Physical separation of oxide from sulfide phases was mediated by fluxes in experiments to Cr-rich oxides and Fe-, Cr-bearing mattes. |
