The microstructure and mechanical properties of an Al0.5NbTa0.8Ti1.5V0.2Zr RSA and two single-phase alloys, which compositions correspond to the compositions of the A2 (disordered) and B2 (ordered) phases in this RSA, are reported. The mechanical behavior of the constituent A2 (Nb and Ta-rich) and B2 (Al and Zr-rich) phases revealed that they are softer and more ductile than the parent two-phase RSA. The ordered B2 phase exhibits a deformation twinning mechanism coupled with a low APB energy and activity of 1/2<111> dislocations. These mechanisms provide high plasticity of the ordered B2 phase. This phase experiences order-to-disorder transformation at 600-900°C resulting in a considerable decrease in strength. The presented results question the current assumption that the ordered B2 phase in these RSAs has limited plasticity and strongly indicate that the nature of the B2/A2 interface boundaries and coherency strengthening play an important role in controlling the mechanical properties of the two-phase RSA. |
