Abstract Scope |
Abnormal grain growth (AGG) affects the properties of polycrystalline materials. While many have reported the occurrence of AGG in relation to impurities, grain boundary structure transitions, strain, and energy anisotropy, the mechanism behind AGG remains unclear. Current characterization techniques primarily rely on 2D and destructive methods. In this study, we utilized laboratory x-ray diffraction contrast tomography (LabDCT) to collect 3D microstructural maps of high-purity Ni polycrystals before and after annealing and observed AGG. Benefiting from the non-destructive nature of LabDCT, we tracked the evolution of abnormal grains and their neighborhoods. We will discuss the characteristics of grain boundaries associated with abnormal grains and compare them to their neighbors to understand AGG in this system. |
