| Abstract Scope |
Rhenium, a rare and high-value element, was added to superalloy compositions to enhance creep resistance at elevated temperatures. However, the scarcity of rhenium drastically increases its price per kilogram and raises concerns that the demand for superalloys could outpace the available supply of rhenium. Superalloy scrap is a rich rhenium source compared to mined ores, making it an attractive source for secondary recovery. Therefore, various routes have been attempted to recover rhenium from superalloy scrap; however, no method has achieved widespread industrial adoption. In this presentation, the development of a novel pyrometallurgical process for rhenium recovery will be discussed. The novel process can recover an industrially acceptable rhenium-containing alloy from contaminated superalloy material. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated success of the novel process at the laboratory scale with potential for industrial implementation. |
