| Abstract Scope |
Rare earth elements (REE) play a critical role in numerous applications. To ensure a stable supply of REE, the idea of extracting them from tailings has been explored. Previous research focused on understanding how goethite-rich monazite tailings behave during smelting to recover metallic iron and concentrate REE in silica-rich slags. Various smelting tests produced three different slag compositions, containing approximately 22-28 wt.% REOT content. This study delves into the process of extracting RE oxides from these slags using sulfuric acid roasting followed by water leaching. The roasting was carried out at 400 °C, and leaching was done at ambient temperature. The leaching effectiveness for light REE ranged from 58.8% to 72.4%, while for heavy REE, it was lower, at 41.7% to 64.7%. The remaining REOT content in the residue was relatively low, at 6.3-8.1 wt.%. These results serve as a foundation for further advancements in refining the selective recovery of REE from tailings. |
