| Abstract Scope |
Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of elements like Sm used in high-performance magnets and nuclear technology, while Th shows potential in energy applications as an alternative nuclear fuel, which is fundamental for scientific and technological development.
This research develops the leaching of REEs from a mineral containing system using thiourea (TU) – pyrite (FeS2), evaluating different concentrations of 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 M of TU (CS(NH2)2) at a temperature of 25 °C with a pH of 1.6 adjusted using H2SO4 with 2.5 g of FeS2.
The results show that for 0.5 M TU, the maximum recovery was 40% for thorium and 79.79% for samarium at a reaction time of 8 minutes, while at concentrations of 0.6 and 0.7 M, Sm was not found compared to Th, decreasing its recovery to 22.12% and 24.55%, respectively, over 20 and 30 minutes. |
