| Abstract Scope |
The often dilute nature of critical lanthanides in secondary resources is a significant hurdle in their utilization as a source of critical metals. Effective adsorbents that can both concentrate these resources and also shows selectivity among the lanthanides could provide a convenient solution to both the issue of dilute starting concentrations and difficult to separate lanthanide ions. A green and cost-effective microcrystalline cellulose biosorbent based on citric acid and EDTMP has been developed and tested on synthetic and realistic acid mine drainage for its ability to selectively adsorb lanthanide elements. It was further tested in a variety of loading and stripping conditions to evaluate the ability of the material to separate light and heavy lanthanide elements. The material demonstrates high adsorption capacity with pH dependent selectivity to heavy rare earth elements, a robust cycling capability, and high selectivity for lanthanide ions over competing background ions such as Na and Ca. |
