| Abstract Scope |
Improving the recovery of critical and strategic metals from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) requires moving beyond bulk processing approaches. A promising pathway is the separate treatment of different electronic components (ECs) originating from printed circuit boards (PCBs), which concentrate a wide range of critical raw materials. Among these, multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) stand out as a particularly valuable fraction, owing to their barium titanate (BaTiO₃)-based ceramic matrix incorporating nickel as a primary conductor and rare earth elements (REEs) as functional dopants. Characterization of different PCB types revealed nickel and REE concentrations of up to 30 wt% and 1 wt%, respectively. This study therefore focuses on developing a more efficient hydrometallurgical route for the recovery of these critical resources from MLCCs obtained through an upstream component-based sorting process by comparing a clean MLCC stream with a capacitor-enriched fraction to evaluate the influence of feed purity on recovery efficiency. |
