The magnetoelectric effect (ME) is strain mediated interaction in a ferromagnetic-piezoelectric composite useful for a variety of sensors. Magnetic phases with (i) high magnetostriction for strong ME coupling and (ii) large anisotropy field for self-bias are preferred so that devices can operate without an external magnetic field. We used a magnetic composite with (i) nickel ferrite (NFO) with high magnetostriction and (ii) barium hexaferrite (BaM) with high magnetic anisotropy field. Composites with 5-40% of NFO and 95-60% of BaM had magnetostriction of 18 ppm and in-plane anisotropy of 3 kOe for samples with40% NFO. ME voltage coefficient (MEVC) measurements at low frequencies and at resonance modes showed strong ME coupling at zero bias for samples with NFO content ≥33 wt.%. The highest MEVC of 22 mV/cm Oe at 100 HZ and 800 mV/cm Oe at 68.5 kHz were measured for composites with 40 wt.% NFO. |
