This study investigates the gradient stress creep test, Δσ, as a parallelized creep test. Where conventional tests provide a single creep curve, Δσ captures multiple creep curves across a range of stresses simultaneously; thereby reducing test specimen volume while increasing the volume of data obtained. Parallelization is achieved by performing non-contact strain measurements on the surface of an hourglass-shaped specimen with a known stress distribution.
In this study, tests are conducted to determine the accuracy of Δσ compared to current models and conventional methods. The Δσ test is determined to provide accurate experimental data across a range of stresses simultaneously; exponentially increasing the volume of data obtained from creep tests, while reducing the number of specimens required for testing. The massive volume of data obtained in Δσ is useful to calibrate current creep models for specific alloys, providing an opportunity to rapidly screen creep performance in novel materials. |
