| Abstract Scope |
The rapid increases in the use of rechargeable batteries have led to a significant rise in spent batteries, creating environmental challenges. This study investigates the electrowinning of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) from sulfate leach solutions generated by leaching of mixed spent batteries with H₂SO₄ using a hydrometallurgical recycling method. Laboratory-scale studies were conducted to assess the effect of current density and electrolyte temperature on metal recovery. Recovery efficiency, current efficiency, specific energy consumption, and deposition were studied to evaluate process performance. For Ni, the optimal conditions were 200 A/mē, 60°C, and pH 4; uniform and dense deposits with superior current efficiency were obtained under the ideal conditions of 300 A/mē, 65°C, and pH 5. The results demonstrate that high-purity Ni and Co can be effectively recovered from the leach liquor using electrowinning. |
