| Abstract Scope |
End-of-life light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has attracted significant interest owing to considerably high metal content in these devices compared to their natural occurrences. In this study, a novel and feasible process is developed for the recovery of valuables from waste LEDs involving pre-treatment of LED beads via roasting and crushing, followed by leaching. The effects of various leaching parameters were investigated. ~99.99% copper (Cu) was leached along with iron (Fe) and gallium (Ga) under the optimized leaching conditions of dilute HCl, a chemically equivalent amount H2O2, at 60°C and a time of 3 hrs. The Cu dissolution followed film diffusion-controlled reaction kinetics at optimized temperature. The kinetic model was well validated with SEM-EDS analysis. Copper was selectively extracted from leach liquor using LIX-84 IC at pH ~2. This method will enable the recovery of other valuables along with gallium recycling from LEDs. |
