| Abstract Scope |
Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials for advanced technologies and the clean energy transition. However, conventional acid leaching relies on corrosive reagents and generates waste streams that require extensive treatment. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as promising alternative lixiviants owing to their tunable physicochemical properties, low volatility, and potential for selective metal extraction. This study investigates the feasibility of DES-based leaching for the extraction of REEs from Vietnamese Dong Pao bastnaesite concentrate. Several DES systems were evaluated to evaluate their suitability as lixiviants. The screening results identified promising DES candidates for REE recovery from bastnaesite concentrate and demonstrated the influence of DES composition on leaching performance. Characterization of the pristine and reacted DES systems, along with the reaction products, provides insight into the interactions between DES constituents and bastnaesite during leaching, establishing a foundation for subsequent process optimization and mechanistic understanding of DES-based REE extraction. |
