| Abstract Scope |
Hydrometallurgy is a promising method in recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from spent NdFeB magnet scarps because this method could be applied for all types of magnets and well connected with existing REEs production industry. High content of Fe in NdFeB magnets causes several issues such as high consumption of reagents and resultant lots of waste generation. Thus, selective leaching has been introduced to reduce and/or prevent Fe dissolution. The selective leaching could be achieved by controlling phases of the magnets, where pretreatments such as thermal oxidation and sulfidation are commonly used.
In this study, we prepared the pretreated NdFeB by applying hydrogenation at 850 ℃ and subsequently thermal oxidation at 650 ℃. Due to the pretreatments, the final phases of the NdFeB magnet were hematite (Fe2O3) and Nd2O3, enabling selective leaching. And then, the selective leaching behavior was observed when HCl solutions with different concentrations were applied. |
