The global demand for lithium in rechargeable battery production has increased the need for sustainable lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling. Conventional hydrometallurgy and solvent extraction rely on large volumes of strong acids and organic solvents, posing significant environmental and economic challenges, and often exhibit poor selectivity for Li⁺ ions in mixed-metal solutions. In the present study, a new class of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) was developed as a green extraction route for selective Li extraction.
New HDES systems were synthesized and optimized for extracting Li⁺ from aqueous solutions containing competing metal ions. The developed HDES systems displayed a heightened affinity for Li⁺, through synergistic interactions between functionalities and hydrogen-bond donors, promoting superior metal coordination and phase transfer. Efficient stripping of Li⁺ from the loaded HDES phase enabled regeneration and reuse of the extractant. This research demonstrated HDES as a promising alternative to conventional organic solvent extraction for critical mineral separation. |
