Numerical simulation of ring rolling is not easy because of three-dimensional non–steady-state deformation. Based on Hayama’s axisymmetric model, the authors considered non-axisymmetry of the ring. The ring was divided into 360 elements in the peripheral direction so that changes in thickness and radius were predicted one element by one element. The peripheral speed of the ring at the roll-bite exit is assumed to be equal to that of the main roll. Therefore, the time passing the roll bite can be determined for all the elements and revolutions without conducting experiments. The proposed model has been applied to hot ring rolling of large carbon steel rings with a rectangular section. It is found that a pass schedule with a constant ring growth rate is effective for shape accuracy of the ring. Considering heat transfer to the tools, predicted temperature as well as forming load agree with the experiment. |
