Abstract Scope |
Numerous researchers have demonstrated that crystal plasticity calibration with macroscopic test data is not enough to univocally determine the local response at or below the grain scale. Optimization approaches, including artificial intelligence, that fit parameters to the macroscopic stress-strain curves can result in numerous parameter sets with negligible differences in their objective function values. Hence, these approaches do not address the lack of calibration data at micro- and mesoscales that hinders parameter identification.
This talk will discuss sources of uncertainty in crystal plasticity modelling under monotonic and cyclic loading. We will present different examples of epistemic uncertainty and will introduce novel approaches to mitigate uncertainty by augmenting mesoscale experimental data with information from material proxies. We will also cover sources of uncertainty in experimental data and their impact on model parameterization. We will conclude by examining opening challenges and opportunities to advance the prediction of mesoscale responses in metals.
