We conducted a comprehensive comparison between Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) theory and phase-field (PF) simulations of nucleation in a benchmark problem. To account for stochasticity, we performed hundreds of simulations to establish a statistically significant analysis. Our results show that PF predictions align well with classical nucleation theory and JMAK theory when the original assumptions of JMAK are appropriately reproduced. Deviations from these assumptions lead to discrepancies. We found that the initial particle radius relative to the critical nucleation radius significantly influences the transformation rate. When the initial radius approaches the critical radius, a long transient growth stage affects the overall kinetics. In contrast, the effect of interface curvature on transformation kinetics seems minor compared to the influence of the initial particle radius. We emphasize the importance of rigorous benchmarking and statistical analysis in phase-field models of stochastic processes, such as nucleation, to make accurate comparisons with classical theories. |
