Abstract Scope |
The antimicrobial effect of copper and silver are well-established properties in the current literature. Their oligodynamic effect can be related to the release of cations through the metal surface that interact with the bacteria cell membrane, ultimately leading to the killing of the bacteria. Whereas the extent of the antibacterial effect is discussed mostly with regards to compositional effects, the rate of metal ion release can also be significantly altered with the microstructure of a material. To investigate the impact of microstructural features on the oligodynamic effect of metals, we combine the shaking beaker method for antibacterial testing with a thorough microstructural analysis combining EBSD analysis with an assessment of mechanical properties. The results allow discussion of the importance of proper material processing to enhance the efficiency of antibacterial surfaces. |
