Presentation Title Mixed Ionic and Electronic Conductors for Reactive Separation of Hydrogen

Abstract Scope In this work, reactive separation of hydrogen from methane by employing a mixed oxygen ion and electron conducting membrane has been investigated. The mixed conductor is a dual-phase material comprising an oxygen ion conductor (rare-earth doped ceria) and an electron conductor, namely, donor-doped strontium titanate. The membrane is fed steam on one side and a fuel such as methane on the other side of the. Steam dissociation occurs on the steam-rich side of the membrane. The oxygen ions formed as a result of steam dissociation are transported across the membrane in a coupled transport process with electrons being transported in the opposite direction. Upon reaching the fuel side of the membrane the oxygen ion reacts with the fuel to form products of combustion such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water vapor. The influence of various parameters that control the rate of hydrogen generation are examined in this work.
