Abstract Scope Electrically enhanced refining of metals by slag with the aim to control and enhance impurity removal have been investigated in limited studies since 1950s. Several studies have investigated the removal of typical impurities in iron/steel, especially those of O, S and C, by applying electromotive force (EMF) between metal and slag phases, and later removal of B from silicon. The literatures have shown that the EMF imposed between metal and slag can enhance the impurity removal and drive the electrochemical removal reactions further. This paper reviews some of the key findings from the various metal systems and provides a new data related to electrorefining of molten Si. Experiments on the removal of B and P from molten silicon with CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO slags under Ar atmosphere at 1500-1600°C with and without imposed EMF are presented. Additionally, the general challenges and future prospects related to this technology have been discussed.
