Abstract Scope |
The use of Calphad databases is essential to accelerate the design of new materials and reduce the number of experiments required. In this context, the CHiMaD-Co (Center for Hierarchical Materials Design) thermodynamic database was developed to assist the design of new Co-based superalloys, as the current commercial databases do not adequately describe the γ-γ’ data for Co-alloys and complex topologically close-packed (TCP) phases. Therefore, to build the new database, available thermodynamic assessments of the 45 binary and 64 (Co/Ni)-containing ternary systems were used as a starting point and new DFT data were implemented to describe γ’ and complex TCP phases. For the TCP phases, the recently introduced effective bond energy formalism (EBEF) was used to describe sigma (σ), mu (µ), chi (χ) and Laves (C14, C15 and C36) phases. The developed database has been successfully used by CHiMaD researchers to design new multicomponent Co-based superalloys. |
