Presentation Title Interdiffusion Study in β - (Ni,Pt)Al Bond Coat System at 1100 °C

Abstract Scope β-(Ni,Pt)Al coatings have been widely used as bond coat materials over the past few decades as addition of Pt improves oxidation resistance by accelerating diffusion of Al to form a continuously growing TGO (Thermally grown oxide) layer. However, this also stimulates interdiffusion of Ni and Al between bond coat and substrate causing degradation of thermal barrier coating (TBC) system. Hence, it is necessary to get a clear understanding of diffusion behavior in β-(Ni,Pt)Al system. In the present study, ternary interdiffusion coefficients are evaluated in β-(Ni,Pt)Al at 1100 °C over a wide range of compositions. Effect of Pt on interdiffusion of Ni and Al is analyzed from the cross interdiffusion coefficients and, from the concentration and interdiffusion flux profiles developed in their diffusion zones.
