Abstract Scope |
Hybrid additive/subtractive manufacturing enables to print large near-net components with improved dimensional accuracy, tight tolerance, and good surface finish. Both deposition and subtraction occur in the same build chamber such that it can remove a step requiring the part to be moved out of the machine for machining. This unique feature enables interleaved processing which is not available either traditional or additive manufacturing technologies. However, the understanding and controlling of hybrid process are still challenging due to limited tools and data in sensing, characterization, and numerical simulation. In this talk, we will discuss fabrication of large-size part (≈ 40 inch), repairing with multi-material, in- and ex-situ sensing, printing strategy, microstructure, and simulation/modeling. Also, we will present the current challenges, achievement, findings, and future steps in both aspects of experiment and simulation from the development of hybrid manufacturing process, where it requires high-quality components such as tools, dies and molds. |
