Abstract Scope |
The current one material-one function paradigm limits the scope of materials and manufacturing research. By pairing different materials and manufacturing technologies, we can potentially enhance the properties and behaviors of materials systems, like the emerging 4D printing of polymers. Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) is an impactful technology that can create customized, intricate components, but most research has mainly focused on reducing defects of the manufactured part. Our group (and others) instead focuses on the use of controlled process conditions and composition to tailor the properties of 3D-printed metals and alloys locally. In this talk, I'll discuss recent developments in functionally graded materials and metal 4D printing and future directions for multi-material design to overcome design tradeoffs. |
