Abstract Scope |
Low toughness of medium carbon steel products produced by die forging process has been continuously limiting its application in the high performance automobile engine. In this paper, the reason for the low toughness was analyzed and results showed that coarser grain in some parts of the products had resulted in the deterioration of toughness. In response to this, the coarsening mechanism of the grain was investigated by hot compression test and the quenched microstructures after different stages were also observed. It has been found that there exited a critical deformation amount for the steel at which deformation could result in abnormal grain growth. A minimum of 20 % deformation was required in order to refine the microstructure. In addition, the effect of microalloying elements V, Ti and Nb on the microstructures after deformation at the critical deformation amount was also analyzed in this work. |
