Abstract Scope |
Shape memory alloy (SMA) pipe couplers provide a promising way to improve the reliability of pipeline connection in various industrial applications. However, the deformation behavior of SMA is complex in the pipe connection technology which involves the structural design of pipe couplers and the multi-step connection process under complex loading conditions such as radial expansion at cryogenic temperature. Here, the experiments for Ni47Ti50Fe3 under various thermal-mechanical loading conditions are conducted, revealing the deformation mechanism of SMA during the pipe connection process. Then, considering the shape memory effect and plastic deformation of the SMA pipe coupler, a constitutive model of SMA is established and numerically implemented into finite element (FE) simulation to present the whole connection process, so that the structure of the coupler is optimized and then manufactured. The connecting samples of the SMA pipe couplers are fabricated, and the accuracy of the simulation results is verified by pull-out tests. |
