About this Abstract
Meeting 2024 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium The Future of Work in Materials Science
Presentation Title Navigating Tenure in a Post-Covid World
Author(s) Chelsey Zacherl Hargather
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Chelsey Zacherl Hargather
Abstract Scope After starting out with a standard tenure-track experience, the Covid-19 pandemic altered the university status quo and Dr. Chelsey Hargather’s tenure experience in several significant ways. Employees were sent home, and childcare centers closed. Courses, meetings across all levels of the job, and research collaborations moved to an online format, with children and families at home requiring attention and entertainment. While many aspects of university life have returned to pre-pandemic norms, not everything has. Dr. Hargather will discuss some seemingly permanent changes, like a hybrid work environment that makes it easier to blur the lines of work/life separation and the challenges of having children while on an academic path. After navigating the changing environment, Dr. Hargather will give some advice, her perspective on new realities, and the challenges facing junior faculty in the post-pandemic world.
