Symposium The Future of Work in Materials Science
Presentation Title Transatlantic Nuclear Fuels: International Collaboration in the COVID-19 Era and Its Impact on the Future of Work
Author(s) Dong Liu
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Dong Liu
Abstract Scope In this talk, I will discuss two examples of international experimental collaborations we undertook during COVID-19 and the implications they had on the way we work on nuclear materials at present and potentially in the future. The first example was on completing a DoE Nuclear Science User Facility (NSUF) project involving shipping of neutron irradiated spherical fuel particles from the Netherlands (Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group, NRG) to the US Idaho National Laboratory for access the polishing and X-ray imaging facility. The samples were then shipped back to the UK for post characterisation and data analysis. The second example was a collaboration with the Advanced Light Source at the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for a hybrid beamline experiment. It is emphasized that the remote access capability and advanced technology established during these two collaborations continue to have positive impact on our current and future work in nuclear materials.
