Symposium The Future of Work in Materials Science
Presentation Title The Online REU (O-REU) Program at Texas A&M University
Author(s) Michael J. Demkowicz
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Michael J. Demkowicz
Abstract Scope In the wake of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, Texas A&M University (TAMU) initiated the online REU (O-REU) program. O-REU offered fully remote research internships to 58 undergraduates in the summer of 2020. Interestingly, the program far outlived its initial, pandemic-related purpose, having just successfully completed its fourth year of operation. This talk will discuss the advantages and limitations of online undergraduate research as implemented in O-REU. It will also present lessons learned and plans for future online undergraduate research programs at TAMU.
