Abstract Scope High-strength 7000 series Al (Al-Mg-Zn-based) alloys have severe formability limitations due to fast kinetics for the nucleation and growth of solute clusters and Guinier-Preston (GP) zones under quenching and subsequent natural aging at room temperature. In this work, these kinetic behaviors were investigated from both experimental and computational aspects. In situ heating followed by quenching and natural aging were carried inside transmission electron microscope, which revealed formations of solute clusters immediately after the quench and subsequent nucleation of GP-II zone adjacent to clusters during very early-stage (~10 mins) natural aging. Our kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations based on an accurate surrogate model of vacancy migration barriers confirmed the solute clusters form rapidly during quenching, and these clusters would exhibit different Zn-Mg ratios and short-range order with different cooling rates. These integrated studies provide guidance on the alloying and thermomechanical strategy to tune the early-stage precipitation kinetics in 7000 series Al.
