Abstract Scope |
We present a novel technique of CNC deformation processing with application to in-space manufacturing (ISM). A trade study comparing the technique to other ISM methods such as 3D printing, laser beam welding, and electron beam welding is conducted, and preliminary analyses of its unique challenges are presented. Opportunities to mitigate challenges such as thermal cycling and solar pressure are explored through lattice design and material selection. To showcase the potential applications, two case studies are presented, one as a solar sail frame and another as a doubly curved support structure for ELF/RF antennas as well as space telescope mirrors. |
