Abstract Scope |
In sheet metal forming, embossing provides a process for targeted improvement of the mechanical properties of sheet metal materials. The local property modification is thereby achieved by uniform residual stresses induced as a result of the one-sided embossing process. For example, such a targeted induction of the residual stresses can significantly increase the fatigue strength of sheet metal components. In order to ensure this kind of component optimization even in continuous operation, the induced stresses have to be uniform. In the study presented in this paper, duplex stainless steel (X2CrNiN23-4) specimens having a thickness of 1.5 mm were unilaterally embossed in order to investigate the effects of the embossing process on the component properties. The primary objective of this investigation was to find a suitable embossing strategy for generating preferably uniform stress distributions into sheet metal blanks. |
