Abstract Scope |
Miniature medical device using titanium and its alloy were widely used due to its good biocompatibility. In this research, the crystallographic orientation evolution and twinning activation of pure titanium during micro-scaled bulk deformation were investigated by the uniaxial compressive and tensile tests at submillimeter scale in conjunction with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) examination. Initial grain size ranging from 15 to 90 μm and the sample diameter ranging from 0.5 to 2 mm were designed to probe the size effect on the texture evolution. The experimental results showed that the volume fraction of twins was increased remarkably with the increasing grain size, indicating the transformation from the dislocation glide to the mechanical twinning dominated deformation. Meanwhile, the volume fraction of twins was slightly decreased with the decreasing sample diameter. The texture is dominated in the fine-grained specimen and the crystallographic orientation was altered by the mechanical twins in the coarsen-grained specimen. |
