Abstract Scope |
The large-strain plastic flow phenomena underlying chip formation in cutting of metals are studied using in situ high-speed imaging and image correlation methods. The two-fold transition in the flow behavior with increasing cutting speed – from steady state homogeneous plastic flow to shear banding, and then to complete material separation (fracture) along shear bands – is captured using direct in situ observations. Quantitative characterization of the underlying deformation fields using particle image velocimetry, coupled with force measurements, reveals that the first transition from homogeneous flow to shear banding is governed by a critical shear stress criterion, whereas the secondary transition from localized flow to fracture follows a strain-based rule. Implications of these different plastic flow modes for cutting forces, specific energy, and plastic strain and microstructure uniformity of machined surfaces will be also discussed. |
