Abstract Scope |
Goodman diagram in fatigue approximately explains the mean-stress or stress-ratio effects on fatigue strength of materials. The construction of Goodman diagram is largely phenomenological, where a straight line connecting the endurance stress limit for R=-1 in cyclic stress axis and tensile strength limit in the mean-stress axis is used as an engineering descriptor of the mean-stress effect in fatigue. In this work, a physically based S-N equation, capable of accurately describing the S-N fatigue behavior of materials over a wide range of cycles, is modified to incorporate the mean-stress effects. The resulting equations are shown to accurately predict stress-life behavior and fatigue limit for any mean-stress, solely from the S-N behavior of fully reversed fatigue loading. The objective is to enable the determination of the mean stress effect for any number of cycles to failure. A diverse set of experimental data is used to verify the validity of this approach. |
