Presentation Title Effects of Plastic Deformation on Austenite Formation in a High-Ni Martensitic Steel

Abstract Scope A low-carbon 10 wt.% Ni steel is processed through a quench-lamellarization-tempering (QLT) treatment to form a nanoscale dispersion of thermally-stable austenite in a martensitic matrix. Our investigations reveal that the austenite phase nucleates on crystallographic defects, such as martensite lath boundaries, grain boundaries, and dislocations. In this study, we introduce an additional cold-rolling step (~10-70% thickness reduction) after the Q-step, increasing the dislocation density prior to austenite reversion during the L-step. Results indicate that by increasing the amount of deformation, the number-density and volume-fraction of the austenite grains, retained within the microstructure upon completion of the treatment, increases significantly. The microstructures developed during this thermomechanical treatment are studied utilizing synchrotron X-ray diffraction, atom-probe tomography, and electron backscatter diffraction analyses. In-situ X-ray diffraction experiments are employed to track the temporal evolution of austenite volume-fraction during the treatment. Tensile tests are conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties at ambient temperatures.
