Abstract Scope |
To inhibit the negative effects of liquid segregation on homogeneities of microstructure and mechanical properties of components manufactured by conventional semisolid forming methods, multi-stage semisolid forming processes including multi-stage rheoforming and semisolid thixoforming were innovated by our group. Both of these multi-stage semisolid forming consisting of four steps: semisolid slurry preparation, first forming, partial solidification, and secondary forming. The multi-stage thixoforming was suitable for ferrous alloys, in consideration of the high semisolid temperature of them. The feasibility of multi-stage thixoforming in manufacturing ferrous components was verified by multi-pass thixo-compression of SKD11 tool steel samples. Multi-stage rheoforming was more suitable for non-ferrous alloys with lower semisolid temperatures. Cup-shaped 6061 aluminum components were manufactured by multi-stage rheoforming on a mechanical servo press. The effects of forming parameters on the homogeneities of microstructure and mechanical properties of components manufactured by multi-stage semisolid forming were also studied. |
