Von Mises criterion claims that five independent slip systems have to operate simultaneously for compatible deformation among the homogeneously deforming randomly misoriented grains and five independent slip systems are sufficient to maintain deformation compatibility. It is therefore generally accepted that only non-basal pyramidal <c+a> slips can accommodate deformation along the c-axis in magnesium, completing the requirement for five independent slip systems and their activation at low temperatures is key to achieve high ductility. In this paper, Von Mises criterion is critically revisited and conditions for compatible deformation are discussed based on experimental observations on magnesium single crystals and polycrystalline alloy samples. It is demonstrated that three independent slip systems are sufficient for compatible deformation, although material with less than three slip systems can still deform with compatibility. |
