Abstract Scope |
We want to report that the extremely fined nanocrystalline (NC) steel with the average grain size of 5 nm was successfully fabricated by using an ultrasonic assisted high-intense strain engineering technology and characterized by using high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The nanoindentation and micropillar compression tests are employed to get the mechanical behavior of this extremely fined NC steel. Research results indicate that the yield strength of this extremely fined NC steel is 2.1 GPa, which is almost 10 times higher than its coarse-grained counterpart. Additionally, strain hardening phenomenon of this extremely fined NC steel was observed at nanoscale, which suggests that the grain boundaries at nanoscale can accommodate dislocations when the NC steel undergoes plastic deformation. Research results will provide engineers and scientists an insight to get ultrastrong stable NC steel could be potentially applied in the aerospace and transportation engineering for mechanical strengthening and lightweighting purposes. |
