Abstract Scope |
SolidStir®-Additive Manufacturing (AM) is designed to address the complexities associated with friction stir welding/processing-based deposition and 3D printing technologies. This presentation will detail the various capabilities of SolidStir®-AM, supported by examples that highlight its high deposition resolution, reduced axial downward force during deposition, advanced microstructural control, and flexibility in feedstock selection for solid-phase AM. Deposition experiments demonstrate the versatility of the process and feedstock, encompassing a range of track widths from 28 mm to 6 mm, the use of various alloys including commercial aluminum alloys and Ce-containing aluminum alloys, and the application of both continuous and discrete feedstocks. Additionally, the presentation will discuss the process forces measured during deposition, as well as the microstructural and mechanical property characterization of the deposits. This development underscores the potential for wider adaptation of SolidStir-AM technology. |
