Abstract Scope |
Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) is a derivative technology of friction stir welding. AFSD produces parts through a solid-state metal additive manufacturing process. AFSD is used to produce fully dense and consolidated parts, however contamination has affected the usability of these parts. Contaminate free (graphite free) AFSD parts are critical to adaption of AFSD in industry. Design changes have been made to current tooling options to allow for graphite free AFSD. The changes were made to replicate the role of graphite in the AFSD process. The design has proven successful in achieving similar effects that the graphite lubricants had in the AFSD process. Combing improved tooling with appropriate controls for the AFSD process have allowed for graphite free deposition of aluminum 7075 and 7050. |
