Abstract Scope |
Thermoelastic martensitic transformation is a diffusionless transformation of nucleation and grow type. Despite of long research efforts on studying the phase transformation of these alloys, some elements are still focus of discussing including the effect of processing conditions and underlaying microstructural state on the phase transformation. The difficulty in stablishing accurate stress-temperature-transformation maps is contributing to this problematic.
In this work, an experimental investigation of the micro and macro mechanical transformation behaviour of polycrystalline NiTi SMAs with different processing conditions were carried out. In-situ electrical resistivity measurements were used in stress- and temperature-controlled tests to obtain the phase transformations diagrams and actuation maps. The results were validated against differential scanning calorimetry and in-situ optical microscopy cycle and tensile tests. The observed physics were used in a thermodynamic consistent computational framework for the understanding of SMAs and the effect of microstructure on their phase transformation behaviour. |
