Abstract Scope |
The need for oxidation-resistant materials has increased for high-temperature applications such as power plants, space industry, etc. Since the formation of oxides degrades the mechanical properties, it is an urgent issue to increase the oxidation resistance. In this study, we investigated the oxidation behavior of Co-based superalloys. To increase the oxidation resistance of the superalloy, we introduced Y, which can be easily diffused to the oxidation surface due to its diffusivity in the Co-alloys. To confirm the addition effect of Y, we analyzed the microstructure with various Y contents and temperatures. The triple-layered structure of oxide was formed, and with Y addition, Y oxide layer was formed under the triple-layer. Moreover, adding Y makes the oxide stucture denser to decrease the pore fractions and enhances the oxide adhesion, to easily impede oxygen diffusion through this layer. This result will provide a new alloy design pathway to improve superalloy’s oxidation resistance. |
