Abstract Scope |
It has been reported that semi-solid grains just below its melting point are easily fragmented by small external forces, which is beneficial for grain refinement during casting. However, the detailed mechanism how the stress field in solids affects the fragmentation remains unclear. Computer simulations are crucial to understand the mechanism and identify the optimal conditions of grain fragmentation for industrial advancements. In this study, we develop a numerical method that can reproduce the grain fragmentation caused by the external force. In the multi-physics numerical method, solid morphological changes and grain boundary formation are modeled by the phase-field method, liquid flow is represented by the lattice Boltzmann, and solid deformation is computed by the particle-based method. Simulations are accelerated by parallel GPUs computing. |
