Abstract Scope |
Surface phase diagrams provide insight into surface evolution in changing environments. We perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations on Mg alloys with small amounts of Ca, a system of interest for both structural and medical applications due to its light weight and/or biological computability. The obtained DFT data serve as a basis for Monte Carlo calculations, which allow us to study various thermodynamic properties such as e.g. surface segregation or order/disorder transitions on the basal surface of Mg [P.R. Mater. 7 (2023) 095802]. Focusing on the identified stable structures, we extend this approach to aqueous environments relevant, e.g., for wet-corrosion and its prevention [J. Chem. Phys. 160 (2024),164715]. |
