Abstract Scope |
In the current study, the distribution and characteristics of non-metallic inclusions in the vertical direction of a steel rail containing 13% manganese were investigated and thermodynamic calculations were carried out to predict the composition of inclusions in the steel. Inclusions in the current steel rail were spherical or nearly spherical Mg-Al-Ca-O and Al-Ca-O ones covering with a MnS layer. The average composition of oxide inclusions was Al2O3 64%, CaO 18% and MgO 8%. The distribution and quantity of inclusions along the height of the rail was relatively uniform, and the diameter of inclusions near the surface was small. Deoxidation diagrams of Al, Ca and Si of the current rail steel were calculated, as well as the precipitation of non-metallic inclusions during steel solidification. The removal potential of inclusions from the molten steel was discussed by considering the contact angle between inclusions and the steel. |
