Abstract Scope |
Juiz de Fora smelter of Nexa Resources operates a Waelz Furnace that currently inputs wastes, mainly EAFDs. Aiming to increase the company’s recovery rate, decrease residues disposal on dams, and provide a more flexible operation, a project to feed weak acid leaching residues in the Waelz furnace, is in progress.
After a project risk analysis, it was decided that tests were required to evaluate the behavior of weak acid leaching residues in the Waelz process. The tests were performed in a pilot scale kiln with feed portion of 15% mixed with EAFDs.
Results showed no impact on zinc recovery rates nor on accreation formation on tests with addition of weak leaching residues, while iron content in slag was increased by 5.7% which is desirable as slags are sold as iron source. The SOx emission of the furnace was increase from less than 1,2(mg/Nm³) to up to 81 (mg/Nm³). |
